Biography

LaVon Darville

West Texas Artist

LaVon Darville treasured art all of her life and sketched as a young woman.  Her first introduction to oil painting was in 1970 when a perceptive 77-year old artist and friend appreciated a natural talent, and under the guidance of this gracious mentor, LaVon’s artistic depth was enhanced.  In the late 70’s she set aside her brushes to raise three very active children.  In the summer of 2000 she returned to her love of oil painting and built an art studio in her home.

The rose was LaVon’s favorite flower as a young girl because of her mother’s beautiful rose garden.  LaVon wanted to express their beauty in oils - thus beginning her famous rose paintings.  She loves the dark backgrounds to reveal the beautiful individuality of each rose.

Being born single-sighted and having never actually experienced true depth perception, she states, “Of course, not having any three-dimensional comprehension, I feel my paintings are unique because of my single-sightedness.”

She has added to her rose collection by painting tulips, poppies, irises and many more flowers.  LaVon has added dogs to her collection.  She also paints butterflies, seascapes, landscapes and still life. She states, “Some have been a great challenge but always a wondrous joy – is this not what life’s journey is all about!”

Since 2002, LaVon has entered the juried art show which is held each spring at Ellen Noel Art Museum in Odessa and has been chosen each year to have paintings hung for a month in the museum.  Only 50 paintings are chosen from around 250 entries each year.   She has won awards from her paintings.   She has sold her realistic paintings in several cities in Texas.

LaVon is a member of the Odessa Art Association and Odessa Council for the Arts & Humanities.
